Cooking can be a pleasure for children of all ages. At Apple Hill Academy we start them young so that they will develop a lifelong love of the kitchen. Cooking can become a source for many learning opportunities. Of course, it all begins with reading a recipe but before they even begin, we teach kids proper food hygiene (washing hands before and after touching raw and ready-to-eat ingredients.) The preschoolers also practice math skills when they count and divide the ingredient portions.

Teaching children about cooking is a great way to incorporate science lessons as well. Learning about the ingredients’ origins can be fascinating while handling them, and kids love experimenting with different tastes and textures.

In science, property means “a characteristic or trait that you can use to describe matter by observation, measurement, or combination.” Thus, children discover scientific changes in properties when they observe what happens to things when we apply heat or cold.
