At Apple Hill Academy our Terrific Twos were recently “doing laundry” just like mom and dad. We know that teaching kids to do age-appropriate chores such as laundry is an excellent way to build their self-esteem. When it comes to doing the laundry, starting at a young age and acquiring more and more skills as they grow up, can be a wonderful life-skills-building exercise for kids. Giving children chores to do also helps them develop and practice gratitude and appreciation for the things they already own, as well as for what we do as parents.
Getting your children to take part in the laundry process is a great way to not only help the adults, but learning how to remove certain stains, what temperatures are best for certain clothes, the importance of separating clothes by color or fabric, and so on, can benefit the child in the future when they are ready to leave home and live on their own. For now though, while they are young, here are some laundry skills that many three-and four-year-old’s can learn to do: Fold washcloths, hand towels, and bath towels correctly; Make neat piles of underwear and shirts to be hung up; Pair and roll socks together, and turn clothes right-side out. At Apple Hill Academy, even doing chores can be fun!
